AT&T has made a move to make a massive upgrade to their current network while prepping for their switch to LTE by agreeing to pay $1.93 billion for wireless spectrum from Qualcomm Inc. This space was originally earmarked for Qualcomm's Flo TV which never really took off and which is being shut down in March.
This spectrum, reportedly in the 700 megahertz frequency band, is reportedly high quality even through walls and windows and highly concentrated in urban areas. AT&T is likely using this to boost their capacity issues and poor service ratings which have plagued the company for some time now. The deal is looking to be finalized in the second half of 2011, so it's going to be a while before AT&T customers start seeing the benefits of this purchase.
