You could make a career out of your love of beauty

Not many of us get to do what we love full time. Sadly, I am not Roger Ebert — I can't sit around watching movies all day and get paid for it. If you're a beauty buff, however, a pastime-turned-career is well within reach. And there are lots of good reasons (at least 12) why you should make your passion work for you.

When you turn your love of beauty into a career, you can:

1. Do what you love and do it well

You already know how to do your own hair, nails, and makeup, and maybe you've even practiced on your friends. But wouldn't it be great to become an expert on the science behind the beauty? You'll do that at beauty school. Plus, you'll get to play with some really cool products and equipment.

2. Snag a professional career mentor

Your beauty school instructors want you to succeed (it makes their school look good when you do), so they are generally happy to mentor you during and after your program. They can also give you an "in" at the salon you've got your eye on.

3. Give back to your community

Here's a great way to fight the haters who say that beauty work is shallow and superficial – so many spas and salons are involved in community outreach programs, giving you the opportunity to offer your services to community workers, hospital patients, underprivileged clients, and others. So there.

4. Make money

Of course, the whole point of a career is to actually make money – which you will. According to the most recent National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences Job Demand Survey, the average salary of beauty pros is about $30,000 to $48,000 per year, not including tips. Not too shabby, eh?

5. Specialize

Don't just do hair; become a professionally trained colorist. Don't just do manicures; offer anti-aging treatments. There are plenty of opportunities to specialize and then carve out a niche for yourself – building and styling wigs and hairpieces, anyone? — so there's no time to get bored with the same old, same old.

6. Go green

If you read product labels, you know there's a lot of scary stuff in your favorite cosmetics. When you become a beauty pro, you can be a voice for change in the industry, advocating sustainable products made from locally grown fruits, vegetables, plants, and herbs. After all, what good is beauty if it's not healthy, too?
